A client has been acquired by a larger company who will eventually absorb client's website but this could take some time (a year or more). We have posted notice of the acquisition on their current site now, but it's time to make the rebrand of current site a priority. Since this site could be functional for some time and still operates as a lead generator for the company, we don't want to negatively affect their web traffic.

Curious if anyone has experienced similar or if there are best practices we should be following for this transition? Domain will stay the same for now.

Alagu, thank you for your reply. Currently we'll be staying on the same domain, however we expect to need to migrate relevant content to the acquirer's site in future, at which point we'll need to consider the 301s.

        Thanks!

Thank you for your reply. I do think the "pure" rebrand stage is where we are at for now, with the full migration taking place sometime in the future. That will be the true challenge from a lead generation perspective, to ensure our client's services aren't lost in the larger ecosystem.

For now, we'll proceed with #1 (with caution!) and start planning for #3.

          Appreciate the assistance!

            Hi Kathleen,

I would think about this in a few phases (you may not do all of them):

            1. "Pure" rebrand - affecting the design of pages on the site, but not which pages exist or their basic HTML structure - this is the safest from an SEO perspective, though you run the risk of damaging conversion rate etc and so it is worth testing as much as you can and rolling out cautiously if it is a large site (see my whiteboard Friday on this for example)
            2. Website redesign / rebuild - affecting potentially anything on the site, but staying on the same domain - if as you indicate, you are going to roll the website into the acquirer's site, then I would do my best to avoid this stage - it's the riskiest without significant upside. If you can get away with #1 and #3 then I would do that. If you have to go through this stage, treat it as the serious SEO project that it is
            3. Migration into acquirer's site - you described it as "absorb" the client's site - I would expect in most acquisitions that you would end up with some combination of existing pages on the acquirer's site that should be the target of redirects of your client's pages and the need for some new pages (based presumably on existing pages on the client's site). Scoping out this mapping is the most significant part of this step - everything else is a migration project to be handled with the normal care and attention to detail

One thing to mention: we have seen people make assumptions that if you combine websites A and B, that the combined website will have the traffic of A+B. This is rarely the case for reasons of overlap / cannibalisation even if the migration and redirects function perfectly. So you are right to be cautious. The more overlap there is between the acquirer's site and your client's, the lower I would forecast the combined traffic. The more distinct they are (and hence the more your client's site could eventually migrate into a subfolder of the acquirer's site for example) the closer you might get to A+B.

            I hope that all helps.

If the domain is same you can do 301 redirect of top pages (old website) that ranks higher to the newer version of the web page.

Secondly, without affecting your ranking you can move your old website pages to a newer domain also. This works if you want to change domain without modifying the sitemap and individual URLs of your website.

Make sure you have the search console access (verified) to both the website domains, Back-up your website and database(s) to restore in case of any error. Launch the website in the new domain.

Do 301 redirect via your site’s .htaccess file (At the old website host). Use the code below

              RewriteEngine on
              RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.newerdomain.com
              RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newerdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Once this is done, then login to Google Search Console and go to the old domain settings icon. There will be an option called "Change of address" click it and select the new domain. Now go to the new domain property and add XML sitemaps to Google.

              That's it!

Seeking Advice on Improving On-Page SEO for my Website

seo onpage seo search engine optimisation

I'm looking for some expert advice on improving the on-page SEO for my website, CCTV Camera Installation. Despite following best practices, I feel that my site isn't performing as well as it could be in search engine rankings. Here are a few specific areas where I'd appreciate some guidance: Content Optimization: I've ensured my content is keyword-rich and valuable to my audience. Are there any advanced techniques or tools that can help further optimize my content? Meta Tags and Descriptions: I've written unique meta titles and descriptions for each page, but I'm unsure if they're as effective as they could be. What are some tips for crafting compelling meta tags that improve click-through rates? Internal Linking: I've set up a basic internal linking structure. How can I enhance this to better distribute link equity and improve user navigation? Page Load Speed: While my site's load speed is decent, I'm aware that even minor improvements can have a significant impact on SEO. Are there any specific optimizations or tools you recommend for speeding up my website? Technical SEO: I've covered the basics like XML sitemaps and robots.txt files. Are there any advanced technical SEO practices that I should be aware of? Here is the link to my website for your reference: https://www.acssllc.ae/ Thank you in advance for your help! Best regards,
                Israr Khan

No index for http version of website

Hi, I've had a message from Google search console to say the sitemap for the http version of my site is tagged as no index. As the https version is indexed, do I need to change the http version to be indexed as well? Do I need to keep the http version of the site in search console alongside the https version, or should I remove it? Advice appreciated!

Can I put the company name in the image alt text instead of just the service type im trying to rank for?

Hello, if I am trying to rank for a service type and the exact phrase is in the companies name, can I put the company name in the image alt text instead of just the service type? Seizing the opportunity to get another mention of the businesses name...two birds with the one stone if you will... For example, "lawn cutting" being the service type but the company's name is Paul's lawn cutting. Could i put Pauls Lawn Cutting in the image alt text, or just stick to lawn cutting? Thanks in advance

How long should my website content be (max and min number of words)?

I saw a web site which has been number 1 on Google for a long time, and the home page has 5700 words, but the results show it is not spam, so what would be the recommended word number for a home page?

The company brand name does not show in SERP

Our company is ranking no.1 for brand keyword, however, when you try to find it by two words(with space between) then all those shows up and the website is nowhere to find. Any suggestions on how to solve this without the need to be ranked for something related

Will ReDesigning my website negatively affect SEO?

I currently have a one page website which lists all the company information on one page [domain name is www. bwd . co . za]. It uses javascript for navigation. My challenge is that the layout is outdated and I would like to update it with a high quality WordPress theme which will not be a one-pager. Currently on Open Site Explorer the website has a domain authority of 30/100 and page authority of 41/100. I've worked hard to push the numbers to get to where they are hence I'm a bit concerned. Will re-designing my website negatively affect SEO?

Question about url structure for large real estate website

I've been running a large real estate rental website for the past few years and on May 8, 2013 my Google traffic dropped by about 50%. I'm concerned that my current url structure might be causing thin content pages for certain rental type + location searches. My current directory structure is:
                domain.com/home-rentals/california/
                domain.com/home-rentals/california/beverly-hills/
                domain.com/home-rentals/california/beverly-hills/90210/
                domain.com/apartment-rentals/california/
                domain.com/apartment-rentals/california/beverly-hills/
                domain.com/apartment-rentals/california/beverly-hills/90210/
etc.. I was thinking of changing it to the following:
                domain.com/rentals/california/
                domain.com/rentals/california/beverly-hills/
domain.com/rentals/california/beverly-hills/90210/ ** Note: I'd provide users the ability to filter their results by rental type - by default all types would be displayed. Another question - my listing pages are currently displayed as:
domain.com/123456 And I've been thinking of changing it to:
domain.com/123456-123-Street-City-State-Zip Should I proceed with both changes - one or the one - neither - or something else I'm not thinking of? Thank you in advance!!
